A strong local arts, culture and recreation scene is part of what makes a city vibrant. It appeals to current and potential residents as well as investors, and stimulates broader social creativity and engagement. Behind Ottawa Insights’ theme of Arts and Culture, you will find 12 indicators that define the city’s programs and facilities, public participation in arts and culture, as well art and culture’s contribution to the economy, and more.

On November 22, 2018, the Ottawa Culture Research Group presented the first edition of Counting on Culture: Impacts and Indicators in Ottawa.  The report includes local data that describes the state of Ottawa’s culture sector in terms of support, presence, participation and impact of arts and culture on Ottawa’s residents.  The purpose of the Counting on Culture report is to provide up-to-date and reliable data to local organizations, residents and policy-makers to support effective cultural planning, evaluation, resource allocation and decision-making, ultimately contributing to a more effective culture sector in the city.

We have used this important resource to update the Arts and Recreation Economy indicators which highlight important aspects of the arts economy in Ottawa, including the city’s culture gross domestic product, as well as an increase in employment income in the arts.

Thanks to organizations like the Ottawa Culture Research Group, the Ottawa Community Foundation is able to enrich the information we provide on this site.
